Udyam (MSME) Registration in India: Process, Documents & Benefits

If you run a small or growing business in India, an Udyam registration is one of the most valuable — and most overlooked — pieces of paperwork you can have. It's free, it takes minutes, and it unlocks everything from collateral-free loans to preference in government tenders. Yet many business owners either don't know about it or assume it's complicated. Here's the plain-language version.

What is Udyam registration?

Udyam is the Government of India's official registration for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). When you register, you get a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) and an e-certificate that formally recognises your business as an MSME. It replaced the older "Udyog Aadhaar" system in July 2020.

Who is eligible? (MSME classification)

Almost any business — proprietorship, partnership, LLP, private limited company, even traders — can register. Your category is decided by your investment in plant & machinery and your annual turnover (limits were revised in 2025, so we'll confirm your exact category):

  • Micro: investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore
  • Small: investment up to ₹25 crore and turnover up to ₹100 crore
  • Medium: investment up to ₹125 crore and turnover up to ₹500 crore

Most new and small businesses fall comfortably in the Micro category.

Documents you need to keep ready

Udyam is based on self-declaration — you don't upload files. You just need the details from:

  • Aadhaar card of the proprietor / managing partner / authorised director
  • PAN card of the business (the portal auto-fetches data linked to it)
  • GSTIN, if your business is required to register under GST
  • Basic business details — name, type, address, bank account, main activity (NIC code) and number of employees

The registration process, step by step

  1. Go to the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in, and choose "For New Entrepreneurs".
  2. Enter your Aadhaar number and verify it with the OTP sent to your linked mobile.
  3. Enter your PAN — the system validates it and pulls linked details automatically.
  4. Fill in business details: name, type, address, bank account, main activity and employee count.
  5. Submit. Your Udyam Registration Number and e-certificate are issued instantly — free of cost.

The benefits you're actually unlocking

This is the part most owners underestimate. A valid Udyam certificate gives you access to:

  • Collateral-free loans under the CGTMSE scheme and priority-sector lending at lower interest.
  • Protection against late payments — buyers are required to pay MSMEs within 45 days, with recourse through MSME Samadhaan.
  • Preference in government tenders and easier onboarding on GeM (Government e-Marketplace).
  • Subsidies and reimbursements on patent/trademark filing, ISO certification and, in many states, electricity bills.
  • Easier access to government schemes like PMEGP and various state MSME incentives.

Common mistakes to avoid

The slip-ups we see most often: registering on a look-alike paid website instead of the free government portal, mismatched PAN and business name, choosing the wrong activity (NIC) code, and — for older businesses — never migrating their Udyog Aadhaar to Udyam, which leaves them unable to claim benefits.

How long does it take?

With Aadhaar OTP and a valid PAN, registration is usually done the same day, and the certificate is generated instantly. The only real delays come from Aadhaar/PAN mismatches or unlinked mobile numbers.

Udyam registration is quick — but choosing the right category and activity codes affects which benefits and loans you qualify for later. If you'd rather have it done correctly the first time, She Assist handles your Udyam registration (and ties it together with GST and compliance) so nothing is left on the table.
