GST Registration in India: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

If you run a business in India, sooner or later you'll hear the question: "Do you have GST?" For many first-time entrepreneurs, GST feels intimidating — full of forms, deadlines and jargon. The good news is that registration itself is straightforward once you know what's required. Here's the plain-language version.

Who actually needs GST registration?

You're generally required to register for GST if any of the following apply to you:

  • Your annual turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh in some special-category states), or ₹20 lakh for services.
  • You sell online through marketplaces like Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho — GST is mandatory regardless of turnover.
  • You supply goods or services across state lines (inter-state).
  • You want to claim input tax credit or your buyers (often larger companies) require a GST invoice.

Even if you're below the threshold, voluntary registration can make your business look more credible and let you claim credit on your purchases.

Documents to keep ready

  • PAN card of the business or proprietor
  • Aadhaar card of the proprietor / partners / directors
  • Proof of business address (electricity bill, rent agreement, or NOC)
  • Bank account details (cancelled cheque or bank statement)
  • Passport-size photograph
  • For companies/LLPs: incorporation certificate and board resolution

The registration process, step by step

  1. Go to the official GST portal (gst.gov.in) and start a new registration.
  2. Fill Part A with your PAN, mobile number and email — you'll verify with an OTP.
  3. Use the Temporary Reference Number (TRN) to complete Part B with business details and documents.
  4. Complete Aadhaar authentication to speed up approval.
  5. Once verified, you receive your GSTIN (a 15-digit number) and registration certificate.

Common mistakes to avoid

The errors we see most often are: mismatched PAN and business names, an address proof that doesn't match the application, choosing the wrong business category, and — the big one — registering but then forgetting to file returns. Once you have a GSTIN, you must file returns even in months with zero sales, or penalties pile up.

How long does it take?

With Aadhaar authentication and clean documents, approval typically comes within 3–7 working days. Errors or mismatched documents are the usual reason for delays or rejections.
